Environmentally Preferable Purchasing for Electronic Products (July, 2006, DOE-AL 2007-08)
When the Order requires electronic products, the Subcontractor will deliver Electronic Product Environmental
Acquisition Tool (EPEAT) registered products for computers, laptops, and monitors and for other electronic
equipment, as applicable. For other electronic products (i.e. printers, copiers, scanners, all-in one devices/fax
machines, or televisions) that do not have a standard developed for EPEAT registration, the Subcontractor will
deliver environmentally preferable electronics that have either an eco-label or at least 2 additional
environmental attributes in addition to energy efficiency (ENERGYSTAR R qualified products or products
conforming to the Federal Energy Management Program, FEMP, requirements).

Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 2,710 EPEAT registered electronics purchased by Battelle Energy Alliance in Fiscal Year 2016 will result in environmental impact reductions including:

  • Reduce use of primary materials by 244 metric tons, equivalent to the weight of 7 tractor-trailer 18-wheelers
  • Avoid the disposal of 1.8 metric tons of hazardous waste, equal to the weight of 15 refrigerators
  • Eliminate the equivalent of 3 U.S. households’ solid waste for a year—6.3 metric tons
  • Avoidance of 1.1 metric tons of water pollutant emissions

Energy-Related Savings
EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet the latest ENERGY STAR specifications means these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

  • Savings of 688,300 kWh of electricity—enough to power 54 U.S. homes for a year
  • Reduction of 119.6 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions— equivalent to taking 86  average U.S. passenger cars off the road for a year
  • $71,080 in lifetime cost savings
