To achieve our Environmental Stewardship Policy and meet federal requirements, Battelle weighs the environmental preferability of the products and services selected in all of its purchasing decisions. Additionally, certain federally designated products must be purchased with specific environmental attributes as required by federal law and Presidential Order. The current list of designated products and required attributes are listed below, separated into Part 1, Products Containing Recovered Materials, and Part 2, Products Exhibiting Energy/Water Efficiency Characteristics.

EPEAT Requirements
PNNL is required to purchase as desktop and laptop computers and monitors which are registered with the EPA’s Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) for 100% of its electronic product acquisitions, unless there is no standard for the product. EPEAT is managed by the Green Electronics Council (GEC) for the EPA. GEC’s EPEAT website provides guidance for purchasing EPEAT-registered products and hosts the product database. EPEAT-registered products must meet the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 1680 family of Environmental Assessment Standards

Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 5,275 EPEAT registered electronics purchased by the Department of Energy Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2015 will result in environmental impact reductions including:

  • Reduce use of primary materials by 336.4 metric tons, equivalent to the weight of 9 tractor-trailer 18-wheelers
  • Avoid the disposal of 2.9 metric tons of hazardous waste, equivalent to the weight of 24 refrigerators
  • Eliminate the equivalent of 1 U.S. households’ solid waste for 15 months—2.4 metric tons

Energy-Related Savings
EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet the latest ENERGY STAR specifications means these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

  • Savings of 919,100 kWh of electricity—enough to power 72 U.S. homes for a year
  • Avoidance of 1.2 metric tons of water pollutant emissions
  • Reduction of more than 171 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions— equivalent to taking 123 average U.S. passenger cars off the road for a year
  • $68,460 in energy cost savings
