Performance, DOE is committed to managing its facilities in a manner that will promote a sustainable environment and protect the health and well being of its federal employees, contractors and subcontractors. Ninety-five percent (95%) of all products purchased for use on a DOE owned or controlled site shall have recycled and/or biobased content and/or be energy efficient. The basis for determining which products have sustainable alternatives is the EPA and Department of Agriculture lists of recycled and biobased content products and the FEMP list of energy efficient products.

Any personal computers and imaging equipment (i.e., desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, copiers, televisions, multifunction, faxes) delivered hereunder shall meet Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) standards.

Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 210 EPEAT registered electronics purchased by U.S. Department of Energy – Legacy Management in 2016 will result in environmental impact reductions including:

  • Reduce use of primary materials by 15 metric tons, equivalent to half the weight of a tractor-trailer 18-wheelers
  • Avoid the disposal of 119 kg of hazardous waste, equal to the weight of one refrigerator
  • Eliminate the equivalent of one U.S. household’s solid waste for a month—153 kg
  • Avoidance of 57 kg of water pollutant emissions

Energy-Related Savings
EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet the latest ENERGY STAR specifications means these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

  • Savings of 41,160 kWh of electricity—enough to power 3 U.S. homes for a year
  • Reduction of 7.6 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions— equivalent to taking 5 average U.S. passenger cars off the road for a year
  • $4,254 in lifetime cost savings
