Why EPEAT® registers products by location

EPEAT product registration is country-specific because product identification and environmental performance can vary by location. Registration by country enables potential buyers around the world to evaluate, compare and select the exact product models available to them. Verification investigation is also country-specific, tailored to the claims made for products in each region.

The public standards on which EPEAT registration is based are the same everywhere; however, in order to broadly support the availability of environmentally preferable products, EPEAT enables manufacturers to comply with a very small number of its criteria differently across locations. For example, a manufacturer may register a product in Lithuania and the U.S. even though the product’s solar accessory may be feasibly included only with the U.S. distribution.

How a country/region is added to the system

The registry is open to the addition of new countries/regions. Anyone can nominate a country/region by filling out the Application for Country Addition.

The EPEAT Board of Advisors reviews these applications quarterly and approves those that are substantially supported by purchaser and manufacturer interest, government support and other factors. Approval may also be conditioned upon considerations such as verification capacity and the availability of other critical resources.

When a country/region has been nominated for inclusion in EPEAT and is pending approval, parties who wish to support the nomination or voice objections are urged to contact EPEAT in writing.

Once a country/region has been approved, its addition to EPEAT will be announced publicly and posted on this page. At that time, Subscribers have 60 days to register products in the new country/region before that new section of the registry goes public.
