Calls for Participation: Amendments IEEE 1680.2a and IEEE 1680.3a

Amendment IEEE 1680.2a: Call for Participation

The IEEE Standards Association invites all interested parties to actively participate in the working group effort to amend IEEE 1680.2-2012 Standard for Environmental Assessment of Imaging Equipment. Interested parties must contact IEEE’s Soo Kim (s.h.kim@ieee.org) by November 18, 2016.

The approved PAR to amend the IEEE 1680.2-2012 standard includes the revision of three criteria:

  • 4.6.2.1 Required – End-of-life processing requirements
  • 4.9.3.2 Optional – Manufacturer recyclers or reuses toner material collected through its cartridge and container take-back program
  • 4.9.3.3 – Optional – Manufacturer recyclers or reuses plastics collected through its cartridge and container take-back program

These three criteria appear to be a barrier to global adoption of the standard. This amendment seeks to:

  • Harmonize one criterion (4.6.2.1) with the approach being taken in other 1680 standards (P1680.1 & P1680.4). This criterion as written in 1680.2 and 1680.3 appears to be a barrier for adoption of the standard beyond North America.
  • Revise one sentence in two optional criteria in 1680.2 (4.9.3.2 and 4.9.3.3) to allow manufacturers the option to conform to these criteria in different countries. Some countries may not have the infrastructure necessary for the adoption of these requirements. This change will allow manufacturers with the flexibility to conform to this criterion on a country-by-country basis, thereby, increasing the global uptake of the standard.

If you would like to participate in the amendment process for IEEE P1680.2a please contact Soo Kim (s.h.kim@ieee.org) with the following information:
